PKP Cargo strikes cooperation deal with Croatian freight carrier

Listen to this article

Poland’s largest rail freight carrier, PKP Cargo, has signed a strategic cooperation agreement with HZ Cargo to open up opportunities in central and southern Europe.

The partnership with Croatia’s national rail freight company will lead to cooperation with rail freight and logistics within the Baltic-Adriatic Corridor and on the Balkans, PKP Cargo has said.

PKP Cargo will be given access to ports in Rijeka and Ploce, as well as HZ Cargo terminals.

Despite being Europe’s second-largest rail freight carrier, PKP Cargo has said that prior to this agreement the Balkans had remained off limits.

Chief executive of PKP Cargo Adam Purwin said: “Large investments, which have been currently delivered in the Croatian ports, translate into opportunity to increase the scale of intermodal operation and win attractive orders in this rapidly developing market sector.”

PKP Cargo only recently completed the acquisition of Advanced World Transport (AWT), which operates international rail freight services to Slovakia, Slovenia, Hungary, Poland, Germany, Romania, Bulgaria and Croatia.
