TfL takes you behind the scenes of the new automatic signalling system

Listen to this article

Transport for London have released a video (click here to view) of Jubilee Line Manager, Kevin Bootle taking you behind the scenes with one of the first drivers to use the new automatic system on the line – Simon Bell.

Together they tell us how the new automatic train operation works, and how we as passengers can benefit. What’s more, it all takes place from inside the cab of the train – where the driver sits.

TfL say that they are testing the new signalling system this weekend.

The line will provide a vital transport link to many key venues during the Olympic and Paralympic Games in 2012.

Recent closures have allowed TfL to get a great deal of work done and they are aiming to complete work by Spring 2011.

New signalling is already in operation on a large section of the line. Most of the work that has been undertaken involves a new, state-of-the-art signalling system which will also allow trains to be driven automatically.

Combined with work done to the tracks, it’ll mean faster journeys and a more frequent service. By the time work’s complete, capacity will have been increased by a third, which means the lines can carry about 12,500 more passengers an hour.

Journey times will also be cut by around 22%.
