DB Schenker Rail Polska & Lithuanian Railways sign freight traffic agreement

Freight traffic is set to increase between Poland and Lithuania following an agreement by DB Schenker Rail Polska and Lithuanian Railways.

Hans-Georg Werner, CEO of DB Schenker Rail Polska and Stasys Dailydka of JSC ‘Lithuanian Railways signed a lifetime contract of mutual cooperation in international freight traffic by the Polish-Lithuanian state border.

The agreement will allow DB Schenker Rail to operate from Poland to Šeštokai, a Lithuanian station near to the border.

A new storage yard and shipment facility will also be developed at this site.

Using the border infrastructure Šeštokai railway station, the parties would not only invest in the development of rail freight, but will also look at ways of improving transport technology.

The two railways expect to see significant growth in container traffic following the agreement.

Hans-Georg Werner, CEO of DB Schenker Rail Polska said:

“Right now DB Schenker Rail Poland is the first private carrier in Poland to have signed such an agreement with the Lithuanian Railways. The development of transportation in the east is one of the essential elements adopted in the DB Schenker Rail Poland strategies.

“The document is an important step towards mutual cooperation, which, without certainly benefit both parties. At the moment we are planning to transport timber from the East to Germany, followed by transport of containers in both directions.”

DB Schenker Rail Polska plans to use its Class 232 diesel locomotive in Lithuania.

Through mutual cooperation DB Schenker Rail Poland will be able to offer clients comprehensive transshipment movements.
