Human focus for Thames Valley Signalling Centre

Listen to this article

Network Rail has appointed CCD Design and Ergonomics to optimise the specification and design for the signalling workstations which control the Thames Valley Signalling Centre including the Western area of Crossrail.

The aim is to ensure the successful and growing UK rail network is fully supported by the best possible signalling systems.

CCD has been working with the teams responsible for the busy area of track from just outside Reading to Paddington.

David Watts, Managing Director of CCD says:

“Signallers play an ever more important role in the new world of railway control.

“What we are doing is applying our expertise in human behavioural modelling to get the best fusion between the human controller, rapid changing technology, increased service demand and an expanding national railway system.

“The ability of the signaller to manage new complex and demanding interfaces is vital to achieving the performance demanded by TOCs and passengers. CCD’s work with Network Rail, Crossrail and Thameslink is at the forefront of ensuring that the best performance is achieved.”

CCD undertook predictive workload analyses to create a model for control of the future train service on the reshaped infrastructure.

From this, and a series of workshops, the consultancy defined the number of workstations required to optimise service performance during normal and degraded working.
