Waratah train project reaches halfway point

Listen to this article

A joint venture between Downer and Hitachi is half way to delivering Sydney’s new fleet of Waratah trains.

Thirty-nine new CityRail A set trains have now arrived in the city as part of a $3.6 billion investment in new rolling stock.

The fleet of 78 eight-car, double-deck trains in being financed through a public-private partnership with the NSW Government.

In February last year, $175 of public money was ploughed into the project to ensure production could continue after the global financial crisis raised concerns about how Downer would refinance the debt it had taken on to deliver the first of the new trains.

The new trains feature a ‘smart’ air-conditioning system which adjusts automatically depending on the number of passengers on board.
