The ACT Labor Party has promised to establish a private sector partnership to push forward plans for a light rail line between Civic and Gungahlin in the Australian capital Canberra.
Australasian Railway Association (ARA) CEO Bryan Nye said the ACT Labor Party will now need to deliver the Light Rail project if re-elected.
He said: “If re-elected, the ACT Labor Party must ensure this announcement becomes a reality, it cannot be another pre- election promise left undelivered.”
The initial costs for the 13km tram line have been revised from $600 to $860 million.
Nye added: “Australia’s capital city should have a better public transport system. As the population expands, Canberra’s roads will become increasingly congested.
“Light Rail is the modern, environmentally friendly transport choice Canberra needs.”
Katy Gallagher released the plan stating that the cost estimates include the design, construction and purchase of trams as well a light rail depot.
