St Petersburg has ordered its first low-floor tram from the Alstom/Transmashholding joint venture TramRus.
The tram, which is currently completing testing at the joint venture’s factory in St Petersburg, will be delivered by December 1.
TramRus has already supplied Moscow with a new low-floor vehicle, which began operating a trial service in August this year.
Alstom and Transmashholding have said that the light rail vehicle’s modern traction system reduces energy consumption by over 10 per cent compared to the city’s current fleet.
In a statement, the two companies said that the tram had also been specially designed to cope with St Petersburg’s cold climate and heavy passenger flows.
