Spanish government announces privitisation of tourist rail services

Listen to this article

Spanish ministers have made a landmark decision which will begin to open up the country’s rail market to international competition.

On July 31, operators will be able to bid in a franchise-style system on tourist passenger services, including Transcantábrico, Al Andalus Express and La Robla.

The decision marks the first step in the liberalisation of the Spanish market, which has to date seen all passenger rail services delivered by state-owned operators Renfe and FEVE.

Following a phasing in process, private companies will eventually be able to bid on long-distance AVE services under the Royal Decree which was approved last week.

Opening up Spain’s rail industry will improve the quality of services and deliver better value for money for passengers, the Spanish government has said.

Privitisation plans have been criticised by rail workers’ unions as a cost-cutting measure by the Spanish government that will place jobs at risk.
