King Felipe VI has attended the opening of Siemens’ new signalling research and development center in Madrid.

The opening of the facility, which was also attended by Siemens president Joe Kaeser and country president Rosa Garcia, coincides with the 120th anniversary of Siemens in Spain.

The Madrid center will be capable of designing, testing and developing signalling and train control systems.

Research carried out in Madrid will support Siemens projects around the world, including the Haramain high-speed railway in Saudi Arabia, the Ankara-Konya corridor in Turkey and the implementation of positive train control (PTC) on commuter lines in New York.

Around 350 employees will be based on site – the majority of which will be graduates.

The center will receive investment of €20 million a year.

Speaking at the opening ceremony, Rosa Garcia said the facility was part of the company’s commitment to supporting Spain’s ongoing economic recovery.
