London Assembly Conservative Group transport spokesman, Richard Tracey, tackled Boris Johnson on his views regarding transport union militancy yesterday.

Speaking at Mayor’s Questions Time, City Hall, Mr Tracey quizzed the Mayor on union threats to London commuters and pressed for new laws that would demand a union wins the support of over 50% of its membership for a strike before industrial action can be taken.

Mr Tracey said: “Each strike day costs London £50million and a recent YouGov poll revealed that the public wants tougher laws on the support a union needs from its membership before it can strike go ahead.

“I do believe that the public is becoming particularly tired of any delay in dealing with this problem.”

Responding the Mayor, who earlier in yesterday’s Question Time said:

“It was a mistake that the Government was not looking to go down the legislative route.”

Referring to union militancy at an earlier point in Question Time, Mr Johnson, had said:

“We don’t want to be endlessly at war with a tiny minority of hot heads.”
