Northern Rail has said workers travelling to and from Sellafield will be provided with more seats on the 14:54 Barrow in Furness to Carlisle service, which forms the 15:51 departure from Sellafield, from 3 October 2011.
The additional seats will take the form of a second carriage for this service, one of the busiest trains to pass through Sellafield every day.
Sellafield railway station serves the nuclear facility of Sellafield in Cumbria.
Lee Wasnidge, Area Director for Northern Rail, comments:
“Overcrowding on the Cumbrian Coast has been a concern of ours and our passengers for some time. We are delighted to be able to provide these extra seats on one of our notoriously busy services.
“The allocation of this carriage is the result of hard work and partnership with the Department for Transport and we welcome their understanding of the constraints we have faced traditionally on this route.”
This follows the introduction in March this year of an additional carriage to serve the Cumbrian Coast, providing 3,000 extra seats every week.
While Arnside Viaduct was being renewed the carriage was used on the 14:54 service, however once work was complete it was transferred to its intended 15:34 service.
