McLoughlin replaces Greening

Listen to this article

Justine Greening has lost out to Patrick McLoughlin, with the former Chief Whip clinching the Transport Secretary job ahead of the Putney MP.

Greening has been appointed as the new International Development Secretary, while Theresa Villiers has moved up as the new Northern Ireland Secretary.

Involved in Tory politics from the 1970s, McLoughlin was vice-chairman of the National Young Conservatives and was a Staffordshire county councillor from 1981 to 1987.

McLoughlin was elected to parliament in 1987 and has previous experience at the DfT under the last Conservative administration.

RMT general secretary Bob Crow said: “This is business as usual as far as RMT is concerned. We can expect Patrick McLoughlin to pursue the same cuts and privatisation agenda mapped out in the Government’s McNulty Rail Review. RMT promise him an all-out political and industrial fight to stop job losses, fare increases, ticket office closures and profiteering.”
