The Friends of the West Highland Lines have been named as finalists for a prestigious national award.
They have been shortlisted in the ‘Passengers Matter’ category of the Community Rail Awards.
The shortlisting is for lineside tree-cutting which restored iconic views – from trains – of the Arrochar Alps, the Glen Falloch viaduct, and the spectacular scenery from across Loch Awe to Kilchurn Castle.
The Friends led the initiative in partnership with Network Rail and the National Park of Loch Lomond and the Trossachs.
John Yellowlees, ScotRail’s external relations manager,said:
“We are delighted that our customers are enjoying the restored fantastic views along the West Highland Lines.
“It is very fitting, with the lines voted the world’s top rail journey by readers of the independent travel magazine Wanderlust for three years in a row.”
Norman McNab, who spearheaded the tree clearance for the Friends, said:
“Our initiative with Network Rail and the National Park should offer inspiration for improving other scenic routes with classic views.”
Winners of the seventh annual Community Rail Awards will be announced at a ceremony in Sheffield on 23 September.
