Queensland’s government has invited expressions of interest for the construction of the second part of the Gold Coast Light Rail network.

The 7.3-kilometre extension will connect Gold Coast University Hospital Station to Helensvale.

The state has now approached the federal government for the funding that would allow the extension to be built ahead of the 2018 Commonwealth Games.

Queensland’s Minister for Transport, Minister for Infrastructure, Local Government and Planning and Trade, Jackie Trad, said: “The Premier has written to the Prime Minister to inform him the Queensland Government will now work with GoldLinQ and the Gold Coast City Council to prepare a detailed submission and conduct an expression of interest process for the design and construction of stage two.”

Queensland officials have said phase two will be built quicker and at half of the cost of the original route.

The deadline for expressions of interest is August 28, 2015.
