Berlin’s public transport operator, BVG, has further extended an order with Bombardier for new low-floor light rail vehicles.
BVG has exercised an option worth €176 million for 47 more Flexity trams for the German capital, taking the city’s Flexity fleet to 189 vehicles.
BVG ordered four pre-series trams in 2006 as part of a framework order for up to 206 vehicles. Following a successful trial, the operator ordered 99 trams in 2009 and followed that with a call-off for 39 more units in 2012.
BVG also plans to extend 20 existing trams from five to seven-car vehicles to meet a growing demand for light rail services in the city.
