Brazil’s president opens Salvador Metro

Listen to this article

Brazil’s president, Dilma Rouseff, has visited the country’s Bahia state to officially open the Salvador’s new metro system.

Operator Companhia de Concessões Rodoviárias (CCR) is running a limited service on the first 7-kilometre section of the network during the World Cup, with the city set to host its first match between Spain and The Netherlands on June 13.

Trains will operate a trial service between 12pm and 4pm until September and throughout June, World Cup ticket holders will be able to travel for free.

The 33.6-kilometre network is made up of two lines, connecting the city’s main shopping district in Lapa with Pirajá on line 1 and the airport on line 2. The first section, which opened on June 11, links Lapa and Acesso Norte stations – a route which passes the Fonte Nova Stadium.

Line 1 will be extended to Pirajá in 2015 and the entire system is expected to be commissioned in April 2017.
