Train operator Renfe and the Spanish government have said that the Albacete – Alicante high-speed line is to open on June 18, cutting journey times between Madrid and the Mediterranean coast by 50 minutes.

The new line will connect to the Madrid-Levante high-speed network, allowing nine trains a day in each direction between Madrid and Alcante.

AVE class 100 and class 112 trains will operate on the line, which once completed will support speeds of 300 km/h.
