Japan Freight Railway Company has announced that the volume of freight containers conveyed by rail rose by 11.9 per cent to 1.568 million tonnes last month.
This latest figure marks the third consecutive month in which freight traffic carried by rail has grown.
This time last year, freight on rail plunged as manufactures suspended, or cut back, production due to last year’s Tohoku earthquake and tsunami.
Over the last 12 months, conveyance of paper has risen by 28.7 per cent and car components by 60.4 per cent.
The disaster destroyed approximately 400,000 houses and cost at least 20,000 people their lives, with many more still missing.
