First Capital Connect last week paid tribute to Downham Market train driver Daniel Edwards, who tragically died in a car accident in October 2010.

A ceremony was held at King’s Lynn Station on Thursday 7 April where a Class 365 train was named after Daniel. The event was attended by Daniel’s wife Mary, their two children, and FCC colleagues.

Daniel, who was based at FCC’s Cambridge driver depot, was on his way to work on his motorbike when he was involved in an accident with a lorry on the Stretham section of the A10. He later died of his wounds at Addenbrookes Hospital in Cambridge.

Daniel’s widow, Mary, said:

“I would like to express my gratitude to everyone at FCC as they really took care of myself and the children on the day of the presentation. My son Morgan, who loves trains, was made to feel a very special little boy the whole time and it will be something we will always remember and be grateful to have been part of.

“I know Daniel would have been very humbled to know he had been so highly thought of to have been given such an honour to have a train named after him. I have been so warmly touched by such a gesture and I would like to express my heartfelt thanks to everyone at FCC for their time, help, concern and generosity they have shown myself and the children during such a difficult time in our lives.”

Richard Maclennan, FCC’s Head of Drivers, said:

“Daniel was a remarkable colleague and has been deeply missed at FCC. We are honoured that we were able to pay tribute to Daniel’s memory by naming a train after him.”
