Queensland Rail begin track repairs after flooding

Listen to this article

As Queensland Rail reaches the next stage in recovery efforts after recent flooding, track repair trains have begun working on lines in the Western and South Western Systems.

Transport Minister Annastacia Palaszczuk said the line from Toowoomba to Chinchilla would have special track repair trains running until the line is fully operational.

Ms Palaszczuk said that for the Western and South Western Systems, repair work was progressing on schedule, and the introduction of ballast trains means the recovery is on track.

“Queensland Rail crews are working tirelessly to ensure lines are operational as soon as possible and I am very pleased by the hard work continually occurring in these areas,” Ms Palaszczuk said.

“Ballast trains are used to carry rock to rebuild the ground supporting the rail line so the introduction of these trains on the line is a good sign.

“Residents will now start to see trains running again on rail lines throughout their communities, and I urge everyone to consider level crossing safety and to take every precaution when walking or driving in these areas.

“Because rail lines and level crossings in the area have been out of action since last month, I encourage everyone in these areas to be alert and take care when approaching all rail crossings.

“Signals have been restored to trigger safety alerts at level crossings, however caution is still required.”

Queensland Rail Chief Executive Officer Paul Scurrah said the lines between Toowoomba and Chinchilla as well as Toowoomba and Warwick were crucial sections of the Queensland Rail network.

“We’re working to ensure vital freight can be transported again by rail as quickly as possible,” Mr Scurrah said.

“Queensland Rail would also like to thank residents and local communities for their patience during this time of immense rebuilding.”
