Northern Rail has scooped yet another top award, this time for its health and safety at the prestigious RoSPA Occupational Health and Safety Awards 2011.

The UK’s largest rail operator won the ‘Transport, Storage and Distribution Industry Sector’ award, for the third year running. Two years ago Northern won the highest accolade at the awards, the Sir George Earle Trophy, which can only be one once in a company’s history.

The award was presented at a ceremony at the Hilton Birmingham Metropole Hotel on Thursday 19 May.

RoSPA (Royal Society of Prevention of Accidents) is a safety charity and launched its awards programme 55 years ago.

The scheme looks at not only accident records, but also entrants’ overarching health and safety management systems, including important practices such as strong leadership and workforce involvement.

Gary Stewart, Safety and Assurance Director for Northern Rail comments:

“Once again, we have won the RoSPA award for our health and safety practices, which is confirmation of our commitment to our customers and employees in this field.”

David Rawlins, RoSPA’s awards manager said:

“RoSPA firmly believes that organisations that have demonstrated their commitment to continuous improvement in accident and ill health prevention deserve recognition.

“Northern Rail has shown that it’s committed to striving for continuous improvement and we are delighted to honour it through the presentation of an award.”
