BBC Top Gear presenter James May has been filming his latest challenge in north Devon – racing a German team of miniature railway enthusiasts.

The task was filmed along the picturesque Tarka Trail.

May teamed up with wine expert and engineer Oz Clarke on Saturday for a spin-off to his Toy Stories series.

The pair battled three German brothers who run the the world’s biggest model railway exhibition in Hamburg.

The rival trains reportedly departed stations at opposite ends of the 9.1-mile section of track between Barnstaple and Bideford.

This is Devon said about 100 people cheered the start of the race which was simultaneously started by two town criers.

No official result has been released as the televised challenge will be aired later this year but reports posted on Twitter suggested the German locomotive broke down, hinting at a British victory.

May’s previous attempts to run a model train from Bideford to Barnstaple along the Tarka Trail in 2009 were foiled by bad weather and vandalism.
