East Coast team joins Royal Wedding day patrol

Listen to this article

A team of three East Coast train staff joined British Transport Police officers to keep passengers safe at London King’s Cross station on Royal Wedding Day, Friday 29 April.

The team – Guard Stefan Boyden and Customer Service Assistants Kelly Snee and Paul Johnson – are all Special Constables and spent the big day working alongside regular British Transport Police officers to patrol the station.

Thousands of people travelled to and from London King’s Cross by train to be part of the festivities on the capital’s streets – and the East Coast team had a key part to play in ensuring passengers had a safe and hassle-free journey.

Stefan explains: “As Special Constables we have the same powers and wear the same uniform as regular Police Constables. We are involved in all aspects of policing with the British Transport Police, from neighbourhood policing at East Coast stations to special patrols across the wider rail network.

“We were delighted to be able to play a small part in a very big day for London and its rail passengers. East Coast supports us by giving two paid release days per month to work with the transport police.”

All three of the East Coast staff involved in the Royal Wedding Day patrols benefited from training with the British Transport Police to prepare them for their role.
