Census statistics map history of the railway

Listen to this article

The Office for National Statistics shows how Census statistics can help map the history of an industry with their interactive timeline of employment in the rail industry.

This month it’s the 2011 Census – the twenty-first to take place. Every ten years (apart from 1941) a snapshot of the nation has been taken, collating over two centuries worth of data on our society, while also offering statistical foundations to build the future on.

The Office for National Statistics, the organisation which runs the census, has created a timeline on its website to celebrate an industry with a similar length of history. ‘The Story of the Railway Industry’ tells the tale of the railways census-by-census from 1851 onwards.

Rail buffs young and old can scroll through the timeline, discovering facts about the history of the industry, while being given employment figures for both men and women recorded by 150 years worth of censuses. To explore the timeline, click here.

The census is a once-a-decade event that affects everyone in England and Wales.
