Perth airport rail link approved

Listen to this article

The Government of Western Australia has confirmed that it will go ahead with a $2 billion airport rail link.

The 8.5-kilometre Forrestfield Airport Link will branch off the Midland Line at Bayswater Junction, connecting the airport with Perth’s commuter rail network.

The majority of the route will be underground, operating inside 6.2-metre diameter twin-bored tunnels.

Construction work is scheduled to start in 2016 and take four years to complete.

Transport Minister Dean Nalder said: “In the same way the Mandurah and Joondalup lines have underpinned urban developments along the south and north of Perth, the Forrestfield Airport Link will drive growth and open new opportunities to the east.”

A design and build tender for the link is expected to be issued next year.
