Derailment leaves Swiss train hanging off mountain face

Listen to this article

A train on Switzerland’s famed Albula Railway has been left clinging to the side of a mountain after being struck by a landslide.

Three cars of the train, which had been travelling between Tiefencastel and Thusis in the Swiss Alps, derailed, one of which slid 10 metres down the side of the mountain before hitting some trees.

Out of around 200 passengers onboard, five people have been airlifted to hospital and another six have received medical attention for minor injuries, operator Rhaetian Railway has said.

The injured include two Japanese nationals and an Australian citizen.

Around 180 rescue workers have been at the scene treating passengers.

Part of the Rhaetian Railway network, the Albula Railway serves the tourist resort of St Moritz and is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
