Strasbourg’s public transport operator, Communauté des Transports Strasbourgeois, has signed a framework contract with Alstom for 50 new Citadis trams.
As well as operating around the French city, the light rail vehicles will connect with Kehl in Germany and have been described by Alstom as the first cross-border trams in France.
The initial order for 12 vehicles has been valued at €41 million.
Ana Giros, managing director of Alstom Transport France, said: “Following an initial order for 41 Citadis trams in 2003, this new contract is confirmation of the trust which the CTS has placed in Alstom and its Citadis solution.”
The new trams, which will be built in France and Germany, will go into service on lines A and D by the end of 2016.
