Nederlandse Spoorwegen’s (NS) has said it plans to purchase additional new Sprinter trains from Stadler after confirming an order for 118 train sets from Spanish manufacturer CAF.

On December 5, the Dutch operator confirmed a €500 million contract with CAF for new electric multiple units (EMUs) for its next-generation Sprinter train project (SNG).

In the same announcement, NS said it intended to order an additional 60 trains from Swiss supplier Stadler.

CAF will deliver the first new Sprinters, which will be compatible with ERTMS signalling, from 2018.

NS is planning to reinstate 18 double-deck DD-AR trains as cover until the new fleet is ready.

NS has also shortlisted four suppliers for the Intercity Next Generation project, which will deliver new long-distance trains capable of operating on both the conventional and high-speed rail network. The first of these will arrive from 2021.
