Severe weather affects rail services

Listen to this article

Poor weather conditions, including ice and snow have caused disruption to some rail services.

Train operators including Southeastern and the new Greater Anglia franchise, have seen delayed and cancelled services.

The disruption is expected to continue throughout the day.

Southeastern say they plan to operate a normal timetable but because of ‘icy conditions and frozen snow on the ground affecting the rails and trains’, there are delays of up to 30 minutes and some alterations to services.

Greater Anglia said ‘all routes will be open’ but many morning services to and from Liverpool Street were cancelled today due to ‘poor weather conditions’. The operator said delays of up to 35 minutes will also occur.

Other trains may ‘have to be cancelled or amended at short notice’, National Rail Enquiries said.

First Capital Connect are accepting Greater Anglia tickets ‘on all reasonable routes’.

An signalling problem is also causing disruption at Farringdon.

Cross-London Thameslink services are being delayed by up to 40 minutes affecting trains from Bedford and Luton towards Blackfriars.

TfL said work was underway to ‘keep London moving’.

Leon Daniels, Managing Director of Surface Transport, said:

“We have worked tirelessly from Saturday afternoon onwards, gritting the Capital’s main roads every few hours and clearing snow and ice from the London Underground network.

“We are running 100 per cent of buses with only one route with a minor diversion, trains are operating across all lines on the Tube, DLR and London Overground network and 4,000 tonnes of grit have been spread across the Capital’s roads.”
