Second Follo Line tunnelling contract awarded

Listen to this article

The Norwegian National Rail Administration (Jernbaneverket) has awarded the second – and largest – construction contract for the Follo Line Project.

An Acciona-led joint venture, which includes Italian firm Ghella, will lead the construction design of the line’s 20-kilometre twin-tube tunnel system.

The NOK 8.7 billion (€1 billion) contract is the largest of four EPC contracts that make up the line’s construction.

Acciona and Ghella hope to sign the contract before Easter and begin work immediately after.

The Follo Line tunnel, which will support 250 km/h running, will be the longest railway tunnel in Norway. Construction will require the simultaneous operation of four tunnel boring machines (TBMs).

Acciona and Ghella will also be involved in the fit-out of the tunnels, including everything other than the signalling systems.
