Transport Minister Keith Brown has repeated his assurances over the future of the Stranraer railway line.

The Minister confirmed that a Task Force formed to discuss how best to develop the Stranraer waterfront and led by Cabinet Secretary for Infrastructure and Capital Investment Alex Neil will meet later this month.

He reiterated the Scottish Government’s commitment to the service during a meeting with local MP Russell Brown, local MSP Claudia Beamish and Councillor Willie Scobie.

First Minister Alex Salmond has already confirmed that Stranraer’s rail services will be included in the Task Force remit.

Speaking after the meeting, which took place in Stranraer, Mr Brown said:

“I was able to once again repeat the Scottish Government’s absolute commitment to rail services in Stranraer and, indeed, to doing all we can to improve and develop the service.

“Our current ‘Rail2014’ consultation allows the public to have their say in the future of the railways in Scotland and I can assure passengers that we will continue to ensure the delivery of the best possible service.

“The Stranraer Task Force set up in November will explore potential options for the future of the Stranraer waterfront and I have assured Russell Brown and Claudia Beamish that it will include rail in its remit.”
