Opening of Houston light rail lines delayed until 2015

Listen to this article

METRORail has said that Houston’s new Green and Purple light rail lines won’t be open to passengers until 2015.

The project has suffered a number of delays, with its original 2012 completion date pushed back to 2014.

The authority has now said that technical issues with Siemens axle counters and damage to a water pipe beneath the Purple line have delayed delivery until April 2015.

Although the infrastructure project has suffered a setback, one positive development was made with the system’s new CAF rolling stock. The first new vehicle, 301, has completed its initial ‘burn-in’ testing phase.

CAF is supplying 39 trams for Houston’s light rail system. Twelve vehicles have been delivered to date.
