Next generation Russian tram revealed

Uraltransmash has unveiled a prototype of its new R1 next-generation tram.

R1, which was revealed to visitors at the Innoprom 2014 exhibition in Yekaterinburg today, has been developed by Uraltransmash, a subsidiary of defence manufacturer Uralvagonzavod, and design agency Atom.

The design team said the R1 would ‘change residents’ attitudes to the very idea of public transport’. The modular design features a ‘reverse windshield angle’ which will improve driver vision, and reduce glare and heat.

The tram’s bogies have also been specially designed to be less sensitive to defects with the track infrastructure.

  1. Stunning looking machine, but I doubt anything that shape would be allowed to run in the UK with our pedestrian impact regulations. That front end looks like anyone it hits will get dragged straight under the leading bogie.

Also, with a name like ‘Uraltransmash’, that’s just tempting fate :p
