Detailed design work is set to be carried out on a proposed railway station in the Auckland suburb of Parnell after being approved by the city’s transport authority.

The board of Auckland Transport has pledged $1.5 million to carry out the detailed design work needed for the station’s next planning phase.

Auckland Transport have estimated that in 2016 around 2,000 passengers will arrive at Parnell during the morning peak, potentially making it one of the busiest stations in New Zealand’s largest city.

The station is scheduled for completion by the end of 2015, with Auckland University likely to be the biggest beneficiary of the new interchange

Auckland Transport chairman Dr Lester Levy said: “The re-alignment of the track and re-signalling in the area is substantially complete, now let’s build a station for all the people who work, live in or visit the Parnell area.”
