After 15 years of delay, the railway line project between Nerul and Belapur-Seawood-Uran has been approved by the Ministry of Railways and City and Industrial Development Corporation of Maharashtra (CIDCO) Board.

The cost sharing formula has been worked out between CIDCO & Railways to the ratio of 67:33 respectively.

The 27 km long Nerul-Uran line is likely to become operational by 2015.

The tripartite agreement between Railways, CIDCO, and Government of Maharashtra was executed in July, 2011, CIDCO said.

The new rail line will have 10 stations and 11 rakes of nine cars will be used in the service. One arm of the railway line will go to Belapur station from Sagarsangam (Kille).

The line will have five ‘rail over bridges’ and four major bridges.

According to the current status on the project, work on two of the ‘rail over bridges’ in Seawoods and Dronagiri has been completed including two major bridges and earthworks in some sections.

The ten stations will be at Seawoods, Sagarsanga (Kille), Targhar, Bamandongri, Kharkopar, Gavan, Ranjanpada, Nhava-Sheva, Dronagiri and Uran.

The improved specifications and escalations were considered and the revised cost worked out to Rs. 1412.17 crore, in which CIDCO will share Rs. 946 crore and Railways the balance of Rs 466 crore.

The actual implementation of the project dates back to 1995-1996, which was to build at the cost of Rs 495.49 crore in the coming five years.

But due to ‘various unforeseen reasons’, the work was delayed and hence, the cost of the project was increased to some extent and the estimates were revised.
