Munich orders 22 Avenio trams

Listen to this article

Munich’s MVG has awarded Siemens an order for 22 Avenio light rail vehicles.

Subject to a 10-day standstill period, Siemens will supply nine two-car, nine three-car and four four-car trams for the city.

The order includes an option for up to 124 additional units between 2018 and 2028. These could be either two-car, three-car, four-car or five-car trams.

The two and three-car trams will operate as 48-metre multiple units on weekdays on lines 20 and 21.

The arrival of the new Avenio units from 2017 will allow Variobahn trams from lines 20 and 21 to be cascaded to lines 16 and 17, where they will operate alongside the new four-car Avenio units.

New trams means MVG will be able to retire 13 of its Type R trams, which will be stripped for spare parts.
