New York’s subway operator has written to Congress in the hope that it can prevent a major strike from ‘paralysing’ the city’s urban rail network.
A coalition of eight unions, representing 5,400 Long Island Rail Road (LIRR) employees, have threatened industrial action over pay and conditions.
Following unsuccessful negotiations, MTA has now written to Congress. MTA chairman and chief executive Thomas Prendergast will also travel to Washington to discuss his concerns in person.
MTA had offered LIRR employees a 17 per cent pay rise, plus an average of $22,000 in back pay.
