New York transport authority MTA has awarded the contract to construct the Long Island Rail Road concourse at Grand Central Terminal as part of the East Side Access project.

GCT Constructors, a joint venture between Schiavone Construction and John P. Picon, beat nine other bidders to win the $404.8 million contract, which includes options that could increase the total value to $428.9 million.

The JV will deliver major civil works as well as electrical and mechanical engineering.

Dr Michael Horodniceanu, president of MTA Capital Construction, said: “Up to this point, East Side Access work at Grand Central Terminal has been largely unseen by the public.

“This contract finally brings the construction from 140 feet below-ground up to the dining concourse at GCT and in other places where the public will finally start to see what’s been going on right underneath their feet.”

The project is being financed by the Federal Transit Administration and MTA.
