Melbourne suburban train order secures factory’s future

Listen to this article

Australia’s Victorian government has placed an order for 30 new X’trapolis carriages, retaining jobs at Alstom’s factory in Ballarat.

The Labour Government said its plan to procure the new six-car trains would continue the production line at Ballarat and secure manufacturing jobs at the site.

Premier Daniel Andrews said: “This investment is good for workers, good for Ballarat and good for every single person who uses Melbourne’s train network.”

This order is part of a new long-term rolling stock strategy which the government plans to unveil in its May budget.

The first of the new units will be delivered by the end of 2016.
