A Japanese joint venture of the Marubeni and Toshiba corporations has signed a contract with the operator of Bangkok’s urban railway to supply electrical systems and operation maintenance services for the planned Purple Line.
The 23 kilometre line, which is being built through a public-private partnership (PPP) with Ch. Karnchang Public Company Limited (CK) alongside the Mass Rapid Transit Authority of Thailand (MRTA), will connect Bang Yai in Nonthaburi Province in the northwest of Bangkok through the city centre to Bang Sue in the south.
The JV will equip Bangkok’s second mass transit line with power distribution equipment and signalling and telecommunications systems.
Marubeni and Toshiba have announced that they will also set up a maintenance service company in the city, in partnership with JR East, to deliver a 10-year maintenance contract to the line’s operator, Bangkok Metro Public Company Limited (BMCL).
Rolling stock for the Purple Line, which is set to open in 2016, will be manufactured by JR East subsidiary Japan Transport Engineering Company (J-TREC).
