Manchester’s 100th M5000 tram has arrived in Manchester, having travelled across Europe from Bombardier’s factory in Vienna.

The tram arrived at the Port of Hull on Saturday morning before travelling by road to Manchester’s Queen’s Road depot.

Last year, the final original T68 tram was retired from service, giving Metrolink a uniform fleet of modern Flexity Swift vehicles.

By 2017, Metrolink will have received 120 new trams to serve its growing network.

Following an initial order for 94 M5000 trams, additional vehicles have been purchased for the future Trafford Park line.

Transport for Greater Manchester (TfGM) ordered another 16 trams last year after receiving £34 million from the government’s Local Growth Fund.

Chris Coleman, managing director of Metrolink’s operator RATP Dev, said: “The delivery of our hundredth tram to Greater Manchester is a significant milestone for us as the operator, and I’m extremely proud of what our 700 team of employees here at RATP Dev have delivered over the past five years.”
