Singapore’s Minister for Transport Lui Tuck Yew has attended the groundbreaking ceremony for Singapore’s Thomson Line (TSL) metro.

In a statement, the Land Transport Authority (LTA) described the occasion as a “major step toward our vision of doubling the length of Singapore’s rail network by 2030”.

The north-south corridor will open in phases between 2019 and 2021.

Once complete, the 30-kilometre underground line will cover a network of 22 stations and connect with all other MRT lines.

Last month, Kawasaki Heavy Industries and CSR Qingdao Sifang won a S$749 million contract to supply 91 new trains to the Thomson and Eastern Region Lines.

All but three civils contracts now have been awarded. Orchard, Marina South and Gardens by the Bay stations are expected to be finalised by the end of 2014.

For the first time in Singapore, ground freezing will be used during tunnelling works at Marina Bay.
