Public officials have broken ground on the first phase of the ION light rail system in Waterloo, Ontario.

The first shovels entered the ground at the site of the planned network’s new Dutton Drive depot to mark the start of construction on ION Stage 1.

The first phase of the light rail system will cover 19 kilometres between Waterloo and Kitchener. Phase two will then connect Kitchener with Cambridge along an existing 17-kilometres bus rapid transit route.

Phase one will be delivered by the GrandLinq consortium, which subsists of Plenary Group, Meridiam, Aecon, Kiewit and Keolis. Bombardier will supply the fleet of 14 Flexity Freedom trams.

Services are set to begin in 2017.
