Gothenburg Central’s five-year signalling upgrade complete

Listen to this article

A five-year project to upgrade the signalling system at Gothenburg Central which will almost double the station’s capacity has been completed.

In partnership with infrastructure manager Trafikverket, Bombardier has upgraded the legacy interlocking system at the station – the world’s first computer-based interlocking – which was installed in 1978, increasing capacity from 400 to 700 train movements a day.

The new EBI Lock 950 system controls 574 signals, 258 points and 585 track circuits.

The project, which follows an upgrade to the Gothenburg Traffic Control Centre, will allow the station to cope with the additional traffic created by the West Link and an expansion of the Port Line.
