Funding secured for Sao Paulo Metro Line 5

Brazil’s National Bank for Economic and Social Development (BNDES) has agreed a R $1.96 billion financing agreement to fast track the expansion of Sao Paulo Metro’s Line 5.

Governor Geraldo Alckmin signed the agreement in Rio de Janeiro on December 27.

Alckmin said: “Our goal is to expand the subway network. [A] larger Line 5-Lilac is important because it is integrated with other line[s], which will give a great synergy to public transportation.”

Station construction and tunnelling works are currently underway, with some sections already operational.

The expansion will also include the building of a maintenance yard and the purchase of 26 new trains.
