Foster + Partners is to develop the ‘architectural vision’ for Jeddah’s new public transport system which includes a three-line metro system.

The contract was signed this week in the city by governor of Makkah Province HH Prince Khaled bin Faisal bin Abdelaziz Al Saud.

The British firm will be responsible for the design of the stations, trains and branding.

The system will feature three lines. The Blue line will connect Jeddah city centre with the King Abdul Aziz International Airport, the Orange line will travel from the south, through the east of the city to the north of Jeddah, and the Green line will travel east to west.

Officials hope to open the metro to passengers in 2022.
