China and Russia strengthen high-speed rail cooperation

Listen to this article

Russia and China have agreed to greater cooperation on high-speed rail projects, starting with the proposed line between Moscow and Kazan.

During a summit at the Kremlin, Russian President Vladimir Putin signed a agreement between the Ministry of Transport of the Russian Federation, Russian Railways, the Chinese State Development and Reform Commission and China Railway.

The agreement will see the two countries cooperate in design, construction and financing of projects in Russia, and the production and supply of rail equipment.

Russia will use Chinese technology in the construction and operation of high-speed rolling stock, Russian Railways said in a statement.

The 770-kilometre route Moscow-Kazan railway will connect Moscow, Nizhny, Novgorod, Cheboksary and Kazan.

In the future, the Russian government hopes the line will form part of a new high-speed rail corridor between Russia, Kazakhstan, and China.
