A CAF/ Thales joint venture has been awarded a $452 million contract to supply the rolling stock and automated train control system for two new lines on the Santiago Metro.

The partnership won an international tender to build and maintain 185 new metro cars for Lines 3 (115) and 6 (70) of the Chilean capital’s metro network.

Metro general manager Santiago Ramón Cañas said: “The construction of the new lines 3 and 6 represents the biggest challenge we have faced as a company, not only because we are building in parallel, but also because we are incorporating best practices globally, technology and the latest innovations to deliver the best possible service to the residents of the 11 municipalities that will benefit from this project.”
