Brisbane train services resume after power fault

Listen to this article

Train services in Brisbane resumed on Wednesday after power fault caused rush hour train delays on Tuesday in Brisbane’s Central Business District and across the South East Queensland network.

“Train services have resumed across the network and there are residual delays of up to 15 minutes after a previous power fault near Roma Street station,” Translink said.

Queensland Rail said that a clamp holding an overhead high voltage line may have failed causing the overhead power line to fall and make contact with the rail, sending 25,000 volts through the signals and switching equipment.

Queensland Premier Anna Bligh has announced a free day of public transport yesterday across the network after Tuesday’s commuter chaos.

“What happened today is completely out of the ordinary and the simple fact is that thousands of commuters have not received the service they deserved,” said the Premier on Tuesday.

“That is why we are taking this measure and from the first service tomorrow all public transport across SEQ will be free from the first service to the last service,” she said.

She said free travel on rail, buses and ferries on Wednesday would cost Translink about $1 million.
