Bombardier has agreed a new 41 million euro deal with airport operator AENA Aeropuertos Españoles S.A.to continue to run and maintain the automated people mover system at Madrid-Barajas International Airport.

The driverless system became the first of its kind in Spain after coming into operation in 2006.

It is the longest airport people mover in Europe, transporting around 10 million passengers every year between Madrid-Barajas airport’s main terminal T4 and its satellite terminal more than 2 km away.

The contract extends Bombardier’s partnership with the airport for a further 10 years.

Alvaro Rengifo, president of Bombardier Transportation in Spain, said: “Our Innovia system’s superior construction quality and optimal service are renowned across the Spanish rail sector.

“We will ensure that the system will continue to serve the airport with record levels of availability and readiness, transporting millions of riders annually until 2022 and beyond.”
